Finally, an update!
Hello Family & Friends!
I know, I know, I haven't updated in over a month! Sorry! Anyway, Delaney is doing fantastic! She battled a cold and ear infection a couple of weeks ago and we're still waiting on her to hit the 17lb mark, but overall she is healthy and growing in height, and of course an absolute joy.
We did visit her new Developmental Pediatrician at Riley on January 4th and both William and I are very happy that we switched. We were much more comfortable with Dr. Keck and the appointment was much more positive than any of the appointments previously. Dr. Keck told us that although Delaney's weight is below the growth chart and is of concern, we are not going to dwell on that issue. She was quite impressed with Delaney's cognitive development, fine motor skills, etc... and in fact said we had an advanced and very intelligent little girl. We NEVER heard anything positive like that from her previous doctor. Obviously even though she is gaining weight very slowly, nutritionally she is getting what she needs for development and growth. We praise God for that and for leading us to Dr. Keck who has helped reassure and encourage us as parents.
Last week she had a visit with her opthalmalogist and we have ordered new glasses for her. She has grown out of the first pair and her doctor also reduced her prescription just a little bit in each eye to try and help strengthen them. If her left eye is not any better(the wandering) by May, we may be discussing surgery on the eye muscles. Neither William nor I want to see her have to have surgery, but if that is what she needs in order to straighten her eyes, we'll do what needs to be done.
What is new with Miss Delaney? Well, she is really quite the chatter box and will repeat anything. She is talking so well and even in 2-3 word phrases. She also talks very clearly including big words like precious, adorable, Clifford, and mermaid. Of course she loves to read her books and points and names pictures. She runs, climbs on the furniture and up her slide, trys to jump now, dances to music, and spins around until she makes herself dizzy! She loves to watch Mickey's Clubhouse, Little Einsteins, and her Baby Einstein DVDs. She sits on Tank and says "Horse" and jumps up and down on him. I tell her Tank is not a horse but a dog, but she just smiles and climbs all over him. He just lets her and is so good with her. She gives "huggies" and kisses. She even tells us that she is "hungry" and says "tummy" when she wants to eat. By the way, she has the sweetest little voice. I love hearing her talk.
Another milestone is that we are beginning to potty-train her. At first she was very into it and told me that she wanted to "sit-potty" and she would go. After a few days the excitement wore off, so we've taken a few steps backward and are just working on it day by day. She is so tiny though that she doesn't really sit comfortably on the potty-chair. In fact her tiny little bottom falls in and her feet don't touch the ground all of the way, just her toes. So, I think that has something to do with it. Anyway, it is coming along and hopefully by the time she is 2, she will be fully trained!
Tomorrow Delaney is participating in a study at Riley for premature infants born under 2.2 lbs. They will observe her in all areas (cognitive, large & fine motor skills) and check her growth etc...we'll let everyone know how it went.
All in all, Delaney is doing fantastic! God has certainly worked such a miracle in her little body and mind. She is so amazing to us and seems to be very intelligent. We praise God for her everyday!
Please continue to keep her in your prayers. Specifically for her shunt to continue to work properly, that her eye muscles will strengthen and straighen the eyes on their own, that she will gain weight, and stay on track devlopmentally.
One more thing...for those of you in the Indianapolis and surrounding areas, the WFMS Riley Radiothon is this weekend Feb8-10. They contacted us for an update on Delaney and will be running Delaney & Breanna's song again this year. I don't know when, so just tune in. We are thankful to support Riley hospital in this way and enourage you if you can to donate to help the infants and children at Riley. Our Delaney would not be here today if it weren't for God working through the wonderful doctors and loving nurses in the NICU. We will forever be grateful to them for saving our daughter's life!
